farafisya menulis It looks like everybody’s life in S.E. Asia is now focused only on one thing – SARS ! We keep on hearing about news of how bad certain businesses and industries have been hit. It’s funny that we don’t seem to hear much news about those businesses and industries which are benefiting because of SARS!
I’m a strong believer of the fact that in every problem, there will always be a seed to its equivalent benefit. This would be a good time to put this principle into test. Just off the cuff, I would be able to name businesses and industries that would benefit from SARS and its likes – Pharmaceuticals companies, herbal & alternative medicine, pharmacies, medical equipments (thermometers, heat detectors, mask, gloves, goggles, air-freshener, purifier, dettol, clorox etc). These are obvious you may say. What about other businesses ? Newspaper and Telecommunication services are also enjoying because of SARS – one wonders who has been sending rumours of SARS by SMS ????
Owing to Hong Kong and Singapore being affected by SARS, many of our socialites have no choice but to do their shopping spree in our local fashion houses. Non-conditioned places are more frequented. One case in mind is the non-aircond supermarkets. One very interesting case is that of garment factories whose orders would have gone to China if not for SARS !
You may be thinking, OK, it’s easy to say because your business is not affected. How wrong can you be. I’ve had a few of my seminars being postponed too owing to fear of crowd due to SARS. So what do you do ? We make our move, we go for intensive seminars for smaller group. In other words, shift your strategy !
Now, here’s an interesting story. Once there was this mouse trying to run away from a cat. So each time it hears the cat’s ‘meow’ it will quickly run away and hide. It became very happy because it now has a way to detect danger to decide whether to come out of his mouse hole or not. One day, while in the hole, he heard ‘meows’ and later ‘woof’, ‘woof !’ the bark of a dog and then silence. He knew that the dog has chased the cat away. So out it comes. And what do you know? The cat was right there and pounce on it. Before it was eaten by the cat, the mouse asked “How is it that I heard the bark of a dog, just now?’ And the cat answered, “Don’t you know, in these challenging times, we need to learn more than one languages ?”
Let SARS be a lesson for all of us. A country just can’t depend only on tourism. We need to have other alternatives. Each and every one needs to be multi-skilled and not just be dependent on one specialty. A friend of mine happens to be a tour-guide, he has shifted gear to give FENG SHUI consultation during this period and he is finding it more rewarding ! For the rest of you, here’s some good news – air-tickets & hotels are now so much cheaper. Service are better too !
Yes nothing is ‘good’ or ‘bad – only out thinking makes it so. And when one door closes another will open in order to maintain the balance.
